A bench is one of the hardest-working pieces in a Singapore home. It seats two along one side of the dining table without the bulk of two chairs, slides underneath when the room needs to be clear, holds shoes at the front door, and works just as well at the end of a bed. Solid Wood Throughout

Every bench here is solid timber rather than veneered board. Depending on the model that means beechwood, pine or rubberwood, kiln-dried and finished so it holds its shape through the humidity swings between air-conditioned rooms and monsoon afternoons. The finishes are water-based, so there is no strong paint smell and no waiting period before a room can be used again.

Choosing a Bench by How You Will Use It

• Dining benches. Seating for two or three along one side of the table, and they tuck away underneath when the meal is over — the reason a bench often suits a compact dining area better than a second pair of chairs.
• Storage and shoe benches. A seat at the door with shelves or drawers beneath it, so shoes come off sitting down and go away in the same movement. See the shoe cabinet with a settee top and the low entryway cabinet with a drawer, both at bench height.
• Ottoman benches. Backless and light enough to move between rooms — extra seating when guests arrive, a footrest the rest of the time.
• Benches with a backrest. For households who stay at the table long after the plates are cleared.
